I’ve always been a little bossy (it’s a big-sister thing) and a maker of things. So, transitioning into art director has been a natural evolution for me.
Kidding! … kinda.
As Redhead’s art director, it’s my job to design effective materials, and also it’s my responsibility to contribute to the overall success of a project. I have my hand in every step, from brainstorming to articulating the process for the client to directing the photoshoot and putting everything together.
I’ve always felt my work flexes my critical-thinking and big-picture muscles, but being an art director amps up the workouts in ways that are challenging and fun. It’s leg day every day!
One of my favorite tasks is directing photoshoots. I’ve always loved photography, so being more involved with that part of the process is exciting. Working with photographers—truly collaborating with other artists—has fueled my curiosity. Instead of going in with a set-in-stone plan, I encourage the photographer to experiment and recommend ideas as they see them, and I do the same. It leads to lots of “ooh, what if …” and “what happens when we …” moments for both of us, which makes the finished product better. It’s like design composition in real life.
Photoshoots also have put me in situations I never imagined. Now I know what it feels like to be buried in corn. I’ve learned holding up a cloth for minutes at a time is a solid workout (hello, barre class!). I’m not complaining, though. Especially when a photoshoot involves unpredictable, yet adorable kiddos.
The shoots also introduce me to people I wouldn’t have met and ideas I’ve never considered. And I love that.
Working at a small agency is a huge creative bonus because our responsibilities and job descriptions sometimes evolve over time. We can take on responsibilities and expand our skills as situations ebb and flow.
I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about doing it all on your own. It’s about empowering others and, as the title implies, pointing them in the right direction.
